Become a Texas Commissioned (Armed) Security Officer

The Texas Level III Commissioned Security Officer Course is required for anyone who wishes to carry a firearm while working as a security officer in Texas.

Donovan Security Services offers a DPS-compliant hybrid course that allows you to complete most training online, while attending mandatory in-person sessions for firearms, defensive tactics, and hands-on skills.

This format saves time, reduces scheduling conflicts, and maintains the highest professional standards.

Online Training (Self-Paced)

  • Penal Code & Arrest Authority

  • Use of Force (Legal Framework)

  • Verbal De-Escalation & Communication

Prerequisites

  • Must meet Texas DPS eligibility requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID

  • Must not be prohibited from possessing firearms

  • Employer sponsorship not required to attend

In-Person Training (Required)

Texas DPS requires the following modules to be completed in person:

  • Defensive Tactics

  • Handcuffing

  • Intermediate Weapons (Baton)

  • Firearms Handling & Safety

  • Live-Fire Handgun Qualification

  • Optional Shotgun Qualification

📅 Scheduled after online completion

Testing & Certification

  • Written final exam (75% minimum passing score)

  • Firearms proficiency qualification

  • Skills evaluation during in-person training

Upon successful completion, students receive a Texas DPS Level III Certificate of Completion, which is required to apply for a Commissioned Security Officer (Pocket Card) through a licensed security company.

⚠️ This course does not issue the pocket card itself. Your will need to submit the certificate to Texas DPS.
